An agreement for the construction of the finish area is signed

The construction of the infrastructure for the finish area in Crans-Montana can now go ahead. Following the meeting that took place last week, an agreement was signed between the municipality and the neighbours.

This agreement represents a crucial stage in the realisation of the project, as it takes into account the concerns of both parties. It is the result of constructive negotiations and ensures the continuity of the international alpine skiing competitions in Crans-Montana, in particular the 2027 FIS World Ski Championships. The signing of this agreement thus paves the way for the establishment of modern infrastructures that meet the needs of international sporting events.

‘This agreement was reached in the interests of both parties. We believe that we have done everything possible to find a solution,‘ explains Ernest Mörgeli, President of the residents’ co-owners' association. ‘Our objection was primarily aimed at protecting the interests of the co-owners of 26 appartments and appealing to the municipality to engage in a dialogue that respects the very close neighbours and allows Crans-Montana to remain a preferred location for international competitions,’ he continues. Ernest Mörgeli adds: ‘Last weekend, when the Swiss skiers put in an outstanding performance, I had the opportunity to meet the FIS President. I told him repeatedly that we have never been against the World Championships and that we have always supported the World Cup races in recent years.

The municipality of Crans-Montana is delighted that both parties were able to reach an agreement, as the mayor Nicolas Féraud emphasises: ‘We can finally get on with the construction work today, which is essential for hosting the World Championships in 2027. We were really worried because the schedule for this construction site is tight, but it still fits.’

The construction work will begin next week. They consist of the renovation of the timing building in the finish area and the construction of a new basement to accommodate TV broadcasting vans and store equipment during the races. The access road to the finish area will also be redesigned.

As a reminder: local residents had lodged an appeal against the building permit granted by the cantonal building commission (CCC) for the timekeeping building and the basement. They had applied for suspensive effect to be granted, which the State Council refused, a decision that was confirmed by the Cantonal Court (KG) and later by the Federal Supreme Court (BG). They had also lodged an objection with the State Council against the project to redesign the access road. By signing the agreement, the residents undertook to withdraw their complaint and objection.
